Books, consumables and automotive parts

Check editions, expiry dates, packaging and compatibility rather than buying on a product name alone.

A book’s edition can matter more than its title

For textbooks and reference books, match the edition and ISBN to the one you need. Ask about missing pages, annotations, water damage and binding condition. A workbook with completed exercises may not suit a new student. Digital access codes may have been used already; do not assume that a code or an online subscription transfers with a second-hand book.

Read consumable packaging carefully

Confirm the exact product, pack size, quantity and whether the packaging is sealed. Where an expiry or best-before date is relevant, request a clear photograph of it and the storage condition. A department label is not a safety endorsement. Do not buy a damaged, leaking or unidentified consumable, and do not rely on an unsupported health claim in a listing.

Compare like with like

Check whether the listing is for one unit, a full pack or an opened remainder. Compare the total usable quantity, not only the headline price. Consumables can have additional handling requirements; ask whether the proposed fulfilment can meet them. If safe storage or transport cannot be established, do not treat the item as suitable simply because it is available online.

Automotive compatibility needs an exact match

For parts and accessories, ask for the part number and the compatible make, model, year and variant. Similar-looking parts are not necessarily interchangeable. Check whether mounting hardware and required connectors are included, and whether the part has been modified. Installation and safety suitability should be assessed by an appropriately qualified person; a seller’s description is not a roadworthiness certificate.

Treat safety-critical items differently

Be especially cautious about used tyres, brakes, restraints and other parts where wear or prior damage can affect safety. Ask for relevant specifications and condition evidence, and do not substitute a marketplace inspection for a professional safety assessment. Keep the original listing and seller answers in case the delivered item differs. These departments cover eligible goods and accessories; an automotive category does not imply that vehicle transfers, registration or specialist installation are provided.
